Reduce Food Waste

40% of all food in America is wasted, and consumers are the largest source of it. Not only is our food wasted, but 25% of all freshwater, and significant amounts of energy, land and chemicals required to produce it are wasted too. Wasted food ends up rotting in landfills emitting 16% of U.S. methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas. On the bright side, the solution is simple. By using up food, storing it properly, and getting creative with recipes, we can prevent this unnecessary waste.

Tips to Reduce Food Waste

Feed Truckee

Feed Truckee is a food recovery partnership between Sierra Community House, Keep Truckee Green and Truckee Sourdough that was formally initiated in February 2021. Truckee Sourdough donates surplus edible bread twice per week to Sierra Community House’s community pantry food distribution. Local volunteers organized through Keep Truckee Green transport the bread twice per week from Truckee Sourdough to Sierra Community House’s Truckee warehouse.

As of May 2025, Feed Truckee has donated 70,000 lbs of bread that would otherwise be thrown away, to community members in need.
